I like how one can assume the ongoing process/business of “making wise sayings” has slowly degraded to the lowest common denominator - folk idiom and blather.

I think it’s more that he was concerned he might be not his best than that he was completely spent. Pride in his craft, not wanting to risk going zombie on the comics page.
